The Painful Truth: Ultimately, We Face Life Alone

Over the last year, I’ve come to a painful realization: no one cares about my life quite the way I do. No one else feels my pain, carries my fears, or lives with my situation every hour of every day.

That doesn’t mean people don’t care. People can love us, empathize, listen, and help. I’m grateful for that. Sometimes having someone beside us makes a difficult day bearable.

But then the conversation ends. I get in my car alone, drive home to my apartment, and close the door behind me. I can appreciate the conversation and feel better because of it, but I’m still coming home alone. Whatever is happening in my life is there with me when I turn off the television and go to bed. Someone else can understand what I’m going through. They cannot experience it for me.

We’re born into an experience no one else can have for us, and ultimately, we each face our own death. People may be there holding our hand, but they cannot cross that threshold with us. There is a part of being human that we face alone, from beginning to end.

And that applies to everyone. The person listening to us has a life they must return to, too—concerns we may know about and struggles we may never see. We can care deeply about each other while each carrying an experience the other can never fully share.

Accepting that means recognizing the limits of what we can do for one another. We can offer our time, our understanding, and real help. But we cannot spare each other every painful moment or remove the need to face things ourselves.

We can appreciate the people who care about us and still accept that they cannot live our lives, carry our pain, or face our deaths for us.

It hurts to know that even when we’re loved, there are moments when nobody can reach far enough inside to ease what we’re feeling. We have to endure those moments ourselves, sometimes without knowing how. But we’ve made it through days we didn’t know how to face before. Sometimes we discover our strength only when there is no one else who can do the enduring for us.
